Handcrafted Wood Carvings and Collectibles

About Shan Mu

The production of Shan Mu baskets is a small cottage industry in central and coastal China. Root carving has been going on in China for thousands of years.
Digging up the roots is the first step in the making of a Shan Mu basket, bowl or plate.
The lower portion of the root that was mostly underground has the most texture, grain and character and this is the part of the root they use to carve the baskets and bowls...
The type of soil and growing conditions determines the color and the shape of the final carved basket or bowl.
The upper portion of the root where the tree was cut is sectioned off into smaller pieces that are carved into plates or platters.
Because no two trees are exactly alike, the color and shape of each Shan Mu basket or bowl is unique and make excellent wood décor accent pieces.

The Shan Mu basket and bowl carvings are unique in that they preserve the natural structure and look of the Shan Mu tree root it self.

Shan Mu baskets and bowls are truly unique works of art. So much so, that a sample is on display at the Chicago Museum of Art.

Skilled artisans take the root from the Chinese Fir Tree and hand carves them into unique baskets and bowls. With their rich texture and wood grain, these pieces are being admired by people worldwide.

Like fingerprints, there are no two pieced identical in shape, texture, or grain. As with all tree trunks cracking is natural and somewhat common with these pieces. Each crack adds exceptional character and personality to which, each piece is truly a work of art...

Care instructions: Applying mineral oil will minimize the wood from cracking.
